Best Truck Accessories for Your Pickup

September 16, 2020

We frequently get asked “what other pickup truck accessories do I need to know about as I am upgrading my truck?” The truth is that there is no shortage of cool truck accessories that will enhance the look and utility of your truck and it depends on how you use your truck, but we’ve got a few ideas on things everyone should have to get the most out of their pickup.

1. Truck Bed Liner

Of all the cool truck stuff you can get right from the beginning, oftentimes from the factory, a truck bed liner is essential. From day one, you’ll be asking a lot of your truck, using the bed as a glorified trunk and tool box, loading it with everything from golf clubs and treestands to sand and gravel. Without a truck bed liner, you’re going to scratch that pretty new bed right up and, if you have a steel bed, you’re going to almost instantaneously begin the slow decline towards rust marks. Protect your bed. Period.

There are a ton of different bed liners out there and you’ll want to select one based on your own individual needs.

StyleApplicationPrice RangeBrands
Spray-On Bed LinerProfessionally applied, a spray-on bed liner is a permanent and highly durable option. $400–$700Linex, Rhino
Drop-In LinersProvides good protection but is not easily removable for quick cleaning. This means that debris can build up underneath and abrade your bed paint. Large and unwieldy.$150–$400PendaLiner, Rugged Liner
Multi-Piece LinersProtects entire bed including sidewalls and wheel wells. Easy to remove and install but more expensive than a drop-in. $400–$450DualLiner
Bed MatOne of the simplest and most cost efficient truck accessories. Does not protect sidewalls or wheel wells. Easy to remove. $75–$200DeeZee, Westin, WeatherTech
Carpet LinerNice option for those that use their bed as a trunk. Will stain if exposed to dirt, gas and oil. Not a great solution if you load loose debris like gravel or mulch. $100–$400 (depending on coverage)Access (mat), BedRug, Dewalt, Lund
DIY Roll or Spray-On LinerHas many of the same attributes as a professionally installed spray-on bed liner, however, quality is dependent on the application and the project requires significant prep work for good results. $75–$200Rust-oleum, Herculiner, U-Pol Raptor

2. All Weather Floor Liners or Mats

While you may (or may not) have kids dropping fries and muffin crumbs from the back seat or a muddy shorthair covered in burrs from the field, everyone has their own kind of mess to deal with in their pickup truck. While this isn’t specifically a pickup truck accessory, it is one of the best auto accessories out there. When you drop the kind of coin that pickup trucks cost these days, you want to keep your investment in prime condition. In my experience, you need to go online and order all weather floor liners immediately after you sign the deal to order your new pickup truck because you want them waiting at your house when the pickup arrives. Put those liners down from the beginning and every time you pull them up you’ll be amazed how new your truck still looks underneath!

3. Du-Ha Underseat Cab Storage

If you have a crew cab, then you have a bunch of dead space underneath your back seat. There are likely some jumper cables, a flashlight and some ratchet straps rolling around under there that get tangled up every time you try to get what you need. Du-Ha Underseat Cab Storage helps you organize those on-the-road essentials, keeping your truck cleaner and more organized and making an underutilized space an efficient storage solution.

4. Cargo Bar

A cargo bar is one of those cool pickup truck accessories that you don’t think of ahead of time–you think of it in-the-moment when your cooler or toolbox slides forward toward the cab. If you have your grab hook extendable reaching tool handy, that’ll help, but even better is keeping those items from sliding around in the first place. Adjustable to fit any truck bed, deploy a cargo bar at the tailgate end of your pickup to keep your cargo where it is supposed to be.

5. Grab Hook Extendable Reaching Tool

We’ve all lost items to the front of the bed and didn’t want to open up our tonneau cover and climb up into the bed to fetch them. A grab hook is a convenient, easy-to-use pickup truck accessory that every truck owner should have on hand. What’s more, most of these accessories also come with a few attachments so they can be used for scraping ice or sweeping off snow, in addition to a handful of other useful functions.

6. Truck Bed Extenders

Every truck owner at one time or another has wished that they would’ve gone with the 6.5′ or 8′ bed or had to transport a load with their tailgate down. Sometimes, you just need to add a little bit more room for those unique loads, but don’t want to have your bed exposed to the car behind you on the freeway, dropping items like you’re trying to shed weight to take off. Truck bed extenders help extend (pun intended) the space in your bed when you need that extra space.

Pickup bed extenders, like the AMP Research Bed Extender, give you a little extra room for carrying those oversize items and then fold up and out of the way when not in use. What’s more, when you fold the bed extender into the bed and close the tailgate, the bed extender functions for keeping smaller items like grocery bags and tools contained in the bed near the tailgate, so they’re not flying all over the place when traveling. We consider a bed consider one of the must have truck accessories for anyone that uses their truck bed both as a trunk and a large load carrying machine.

7. Truck Bed Storage Cases

While the space behind your wheel well might be good for holding a ratchet strap or extra trailer hitch, it doesn’t tend to get used for much else. There are a variety of products that make better use of this underutilized space and help to turn it into a real asset.

Some truck brands have adapted and come up with new ways to help organize the bed of your truck, like the Honda Ridgeline’s under bed trunk and the Rambox bed rail cargo storage. While these offer some nice functionality, they can also introduce other issues with regards to accessing your cargo or keeping your truck compatible with other aftermarket accessories. That’s where truck bed storage cases really shine, giving you additional vertical storage space in your bed.

8. Ladder Racks and Cargo Racks

Speaking of awesome truck accessories, anything that can gain you more storage space is a plus in our book. Ladder racks and cargo racks are great for using the space above your bed for canoes and kayaks, bikes, cargo racks, fishing poles or really any gear that is large and takes up a lot of space. When you store cargo above your bed, it keeps the space inside of your bed (under lock and key with a Peragon tonneau cover) free to use for your remaining cargo. The Peragon tonneau cover really shines in conjunction with ladder and cargo racks with its innovative open into-the-bed design so that you can fully utilize the space above the bed too for additional storage.

The Peragon tonneau works with a variety of the most popular ladder racks on the market. Visit our truck accessory compatibility post for more information on fitment.

9. Deezee Tailgate Assist

For those that upgraded to a Platinum package and have the remote tailgate that is also weighted and easy-to-use, this might not make it on the list of coolest truck accessories, however, for the rest of us, it sure does. I’ve been lifting my heavy Chevy Silverado 2500 HD tailgate now for about 5 years and while I still have my strength from throwing hay bales, it gets a little old when I also have a tile saw or air compressor in my other hand.

10. Peragon Tonneau Cover

The list of best truck accessories for 2020 wouldn’t be complete without a Peragon truck bed cover. In fact, we find that a tonneau cover is one of the most essential truck accessories given that it enhances the functionality so greatly. With the install of an all aluminum bed cover you elevate your truck bed to a fully secured, weather resistant cargo space where you can feel comfortable storing and transporting your gear around town or on interstate trips.

  1. Jerry Tennant

I saw a digital add on my phone for a truck bed ladder for getting in and out of the pick-up bed. It looked like it attaches to the side of the tailgate.

Can you send me information on this?

Hi Jerry! That is not a product we offer. It sounds like you’re talking about a tailgate ladder. A quick google search should help you find several options for purchasing one!
