Tailgate Seal Installation

Video Transcript

The tailgate seal is applied to the truck bed to create an effective seal between the tailgate and the bed of the truck. Limiting the entry of dust and water into the bed. Before starting the installation you’ll want to have paper towels, rubbing alcohol, and scissors. The tailgate seal kit includes a 9 foot piece of EPDM rubber with adhesive backing. The seal should be applied where the truck bed interfaces with the tailgate at the base and up both sides. To begin use rubbing alcohol where you’ll be applying the seal. Cut a one-inch piece of seal and check the alignment in various locations to determine the best position for an effective seal with the tailgate. The seal bulb should face up across the bottom of the bed and inward on the side of the bed. On the sides it is best to seat the bulb around the radius of the sheet metal. On the base the top of the bulb should be flush with the bottom of the bed. If this area has folds or laps in the sheet metal, adjust the position so that the adhesive backing is on a flat continuous surface. Measure across the bottom of the truck bed between the sidewalls and cut a piece of seal to fit. Peel the liner off the seal and apply it bulb side up across the bottom of the truck bed. Measure up the side of the truck bed and cut two pieces of seal to fit. Peel the liner off the seal and apply it from bottom to the top, bulb side inward, up both sides of the truck bed. During initial application of the seal to the truck bed do not press it firmly to the bed until you have closed the tailgate and made sure the seal is in the best position. Shut the tailgate and check for light between the tailgate and seal. Reposition the seal as needed. The seal should not be repositioned after 10 minutes. Once the seal is in its final position press it firmly along the entire surface of the adhesive strip to the truck bed.
